Progressive author John Gorenfeld recently released a book exposing the unsavory ties between the GOP and billionaire, Washington Times Publisher (and convicted tax cheat) Reverend Sun Myung Moon. In his book, Bad Moon Rising, Gorenfeld shows the relationship between many in the Republican hierarchy, including the Bush clan, and a man who has often been charged with being a leader of a cult.
What is beyond question, however, is that a high-ranking McCain Campaign official, Charlie Black, has planned ceremonies for Moon to be crowned "King Of America," and Moon has had damning things to say about the Christian faith.
First from an email chain between Gorenfeld and Black:

Dear Mr. Black,
Thanks for your reply.
It's kind of an amazing event, with Moon being coronated as the king and declaring himself the Messiah at a federal building. Can you tell me how you got involved with inviting people? Is this an annual event, or just a one-time thing?
sincerely,
John

John,
I lent my name and sent invitations to a few friends. Unfortunately, I had a conflict and couldn't go to the event.
Charlie
So what is clear from this email is that top Mccain advisor Charlie Black is admitting that he helped plan, and would have attended, an event where a convicted tax fraud would have been crowned King Of America and declared himself the Messiah--all on U.S. Government federal property (on March 23, 2004).
According to The New York Times:
"Mr. Moon, an eccentric billionaire, convicted tax cheat, conservative publisher and power broker, grandly donned scarlet robes and a golden crown at the Dirksen Office Building. ''I am God's ambassador, sent to earth with his full authority..."
Gorenfeld explains more about Moon's attacks on Christianity in this piece, and it makes one wonder how much Black knows about the man who he is willing to honor as The Messiah:
For while Moon publishes the conservative Washington Times, he also embarrasses his Republican allies by claiming to be the Second Coming and denouncing crucifixes as rivals to his majesty. And in a sight that ought to have Christians rioting in the streets, Moon even staged a bizarre "funeral" for a wooden cross in Jerusalem.
--------
The Senate event, in the eyes of the Moonies, meant our government was honoring Moon's messianic claims. Central to his teachings is the doctrine that Jesus blew his mission by being executed, meaning God had to call for Moon, a kind of relief pitcher.

One wonders what many in the media would do if Reverend Jeremiah Wright called Jesus a "failure," proclaimed he (Wright) was the "Messiah" called in by God to clean up Jesus' mess and staged mock funerals for Christian crosses.

Once again, Charlie Black is one of McCain's top two or three advisors on his presidential campaign. I called him for comment and will update you if he gets back to me.

Thanks Cliff. I just spotlighted it to Olbermann, as well as some less enlightened journalists, who I thought might be interested in “defending” Xtianity.
So to summarize:
The McCain campaign has sought and gotten endorsements from the following religious figures:
1) One who believes that Katrina was caused by gays and that the Catholic church is a “great whore”;
2) One who believes that 9/11 was caused by the ACLU;
3) One who believes that the US was founded to destroy Islam;
4) and one who believed that Jesus was a failure and that he is the Messiah.
And the media is worried about Rev. Wright?!?
Make the last bullet “believes”
Batshit crazy fundie pastors…
There’s a sitcom waiting to happen!
I’m sorry but I don’t see how the Rev. Jeremiah Wright in any way can be compared to any of these.
The Rev. Wright served his country and while the controversial sermons may be offensive to some I believe they were intended to point this country towards a more “Christian” path.
I probably could have said that better.
I’d rather we not be in a position where we say “Rev. Wright said this … but at least it wasn’t as bad as batshit Moonie said that ….
Score!!!!!!!
Cliff, I hope you aren’t holding your breath for that callback.
Good Lard!
The only thing a gop operative does to vet any supporter is look at the size of their donations. period.
Nah, Matt, not really expecting to hear back from anyone on the McCain Campaign. But it is fun trying
Thanks for getting it to Olbermann Boo. We need this out there…
McMoonie!?!?!
30 Rock had McCain going to a “Committee for the re-invasion of Vietnam” fundrasier!
you aren’t kidding
cliff, have you posted a “take” on the evangelical manifesto that was issued a couple of days ago?
It seems this would be a more productive way to counter the Slay in the Name of the Lord platform that righties like so much. Evangelicals are tired of having their faith perverted.
Unlike the people’s party candidates. . . right
hi raven. i see your point, but it seems like another helping of IOKIYAR to me.
Didn’t the Rev Moon marry Liz Trotta and Bill Sammons
or was it Tony Blankley. The Washington Times is responsible for providing cover for a lot of Republican craptastic panderings in the media.
Aw, you got there before I did.
I’m concerned about countering the whole Wright thing with a GOP pastor thing. Exception being that Parsley is equally wacko.
The Evangelicals, ironically, seem to be reclaiming their faith from radical neo-cons that seek to justify their crimes with God says so. And they take responsibility for allowing the politicization to happen. I am cautiously optimistic that Christianity will cease to provide justification for blowing up non christians. naive? yeah.
I’m sorry, I’s just a cynic.
I still haven’t gotten beyond how any American would want to let Wright manipulate or hijack the election by making “white people who didn’t finish college” all concerned that Obama might have the same values as Wright. Apparently those with college educations are more critical thinkers who know better than to let someone else charge up their emotions that way.
The Evangelicals
the minute they do they’ll go on the shit list too!
Easy
I asked this question the other day: Where are the Christian pastors/leaders like Jim Wallis? I haven’t seen a peep out of any of the “great American” churches. Is it gonna be left up to folks like firepups to take these fools on? When mainstream churches won’t stand up for their core beliefs I have to ask what’s going on.
Jeez, another post already. I can’t read that fast, dammnit.
I’d tell what I think but then I’d get all those “All Christians are not phony hypocrites” messages so I guess I won’t.
Yeah. It’s interesting to follow this story because of which thumpers signed the manifesto and which didn’t (and claim they weren’t asked).
I wonder if Moon is the source of the Koolaid…
I’ve know of this story ever since it happened, but the idea that the Moonies were able to stage such a “demonic” ritual in our Federal building, with our elected representatives…is nothing short of complete and utter insanity…or Satanic…
The idea that they would stand by and allow a person to be “crowned King of America and the Messiah….I just can’t even come up with words to describe my horror about all of this.
I’m going to get some holy water or holy oil or something…maybe a sage stick…Just forking unbelievable.
Shudder.
LOL. I can’t read that fast either.
Check it out:
manifesto
and
one writer’s take on it at newsweek.
Did McBush attend?
don’t forget the garlic!
His Tom Tom was down, he ended up wandering in the desert.
Must have lost his bearings.
She, this is why there is so much bitchin and moanin here
Do a “Not all Christians are hypocrites” disclaimer first. Then lay on with a will.
Too may run-ins with Chaplains and forced services. You familiar with the USS Vance?
You would think that all the “Christian” churches would come out enmasse and denounce Moon and those who participated for blasphemy of the highest order.
Are they just unaware??
Maybe we should send this post to the Vatican and see if the Pope will come out and take a stand on Moon.
Geez, lindsay graham i am crackers was at the moonie coronation, why am i NOT surprised?
here’s another link with more on teh crazy goopers who attended and then said they didn’t and then said maybe they were there but were channeling their own higher power at the time…
I heard this discussed on a late night radio show with the authors and profs and stuff.
What a bunch of crap. (she said unhappily). Conservatives like the status quo and are uncomfortable with change. Right now, the status quo is working quite well for them.
John Gorenfeld’s Salon article is awesome. here are some choice excerpts
and
Maybe this explains why McCain, who asserts he is a Southern Baptist, has never actually undertaken adult Baptism? He attends the church only so he can appear devout in public…
Pet peeve: You don’t “coronate” someone, you “crown” them.
How did our Democratic senate let this happen. Or is this just another case of “off the table?”
