TOM ALLEN SUPPORTS BARACK OBAMA
PORTLAND - Congressman and U.S. Senate candidate Tom Allen today pledged his support to Senator Barack Obama. Allen made his announcement during a 10:30 a.m. press conference at his campaign headquarters here.
Allen said he believes that both Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton are "supremely qualified to be president."
"I have been friends for a very long time with former President Clinton and Senator Clinton. I respect their service to our nation. Hillary Clinton has run a vigorous campaign and has attracted a passionate following in Maine and around the country. She loves this country and is a true leader. For her service, I am grateful," he said.
"Most of the primary voters across the nation have now spoken. It is time to bring a graceful end to the primary campaign. We now need to unify the Democratic Party and focus on electing Senator Obama and a working majority in the United States Senate. That is how we can change the direction of the country.
"I am running for the U.S. Senate because I believe Maine should lead the change this country needs. I share important priorities with Barack Obama: universal health care, reining in gas and food prices, greater independence from foreign oil, bringing our troops safely home from Iraq, creating jobs and strengthening the middle class."
Allen said Obama is the embodiment of change for Maine and America.
"In February I watched a new generation of Mainers become involved in our nominating process because they were energized and hopeful about the future. I watched Independents and Democrats - and even a lot of Republicans -- in Maine enthusiastically support Barack Obama because they believe he can and will put America back on track," he said.
Obama won Maine's Democratic caucuses in February. His candidacy helped drive record turnout of some 45,000 participants.
Senator Obama said Maine needs Tom Allen in the U.S. Senate for the change we need. Obama's full statement:
"Tom Allen understands the challenges this country is facing, and no one has worked harder to solve them. He knows that if we're going to bring about the change this country needs, we're going to have to change the way Washington works. That's why he's never been afraid to stand up to the special interests and demand accountability from our leaders.
"Like me, Tom opposed the war in Iraq from the start, and he's been a tireless advocate for ending the war and reshaping our foreign policy to truly make this country safer and more respected. He's fought for tax cuts for the middle class, health care for all, and a return to fiscal responsibility -- something this President and his allies in the Senate seem to have forgotten about completely.
"I've had the opportunity to meet voters from every corner of Maine, and they have spoken with one voice about the need for real change. There's no question that Tom's record of service, his tenacity, and his judgment will make him an excellent Senator. I'm thrilled to be working alongside him in this critical election, and I look forward to working with him as President."

So the SD’s continue to trickle from Camp Clinton into Camp Obama.
I appreciate Cliff’s work in keeping track, and in continuing to blog interesting aspects of the evolving campaign.
I respect Senator Clinton’s right to keep on campaigning. I’ve lost most of my respect for Senator Clinton mainly because she claims she is experienced in a job for which she has considerably less experience and skill than Barack Obama IMHO and she claims experience but never defines where she got it (aside from making up she was shot at). Additionally she lies often and disrespects the electorate in whoring ploys like the gas tax holiday which only the very stupid/uneducated/both embrace. She also plays poor picked on/vicious kitchen sink warrior and the items in her kitchen sink are pure viscious lies. She and her husband also have uncovered their true deep racial hatred and tapped into the rich veins of racial hatred in this country and now the racial hatred is hemorrhaging into the streets courtesy of the Clintons but it needed to be showcased because it’s always been vibrant.
I can go to certain neighborhoods and piss off people (some drunk and some not) who will take a swing at me or pull a knife or shoot at me and film it. My first experience at being shot at was when someone crazy came into an emergency room when I was a first year med student and started shooting wildly. He didn’t hit anyone fortunately. That also didn’t enhance my resume to as “experienced to be President of the US” either. Another difference is that Clinton deliberately lied and made up that she was shot at. I didn’t.
So I have mixed emotions about the Super D’s lacking the guts to end this election. I respect that people in every state want to have their votes counted even though Clinton is through and will never become President in her lifetime on earth. I don’t understand what she’s gaining by a “long goodbye.” I don’t know what’s in the water that an experienced attorney like Jeralyn Merritt who once served on the Tim McVeigh defense team has drunk to make her think Clinton is still viable posting ridiculous jibes at Obama and ridiculous ideas that Obama should be AG under a President Clinton. Someone should school Jeralyn in the Separation of Powers doctrine (we don’t have it in this administration and we’ve never had it purely since the framers but we have the theory of it) because President Obama can’t be AG but he can sure as hell kick some butt and clean house in a corrupt Main Justice Department and old man McCasey the ruthless lying bastard will be gone but his damage will remain. Judge Chertoff, another ruthless lying bastard will be gone but his damage will remain.
I’m going to guess by the way that Mike Chertoff and his wife and kids and his dad the Rabbi in New Jersey don’t seek the level of the lack of medical care that is being imposed in ICE detention facilities that is killing some citizens of the US and some immigrants in Elizabeth, New Jersey and other DHS/D
OJ administered facilities who are illegal technically because they had a municiple traffic misdemeanor.
I would remind everyone that experienced practicing immigration attorneys are encountering the nastiness typical of this administration–Monica Goodling–a twit from one of the worst law schools in the US actually interviewed and vetted hacks who are now sitting Immigration Judges who have no litigation experience. It may surprise many of you, but it’s not news to some attorneys who comment on EW’s blog or the two former DOJsters on Jane’s blog that many federal appellate and trial judges had no prior experience in a federal courtroom prior to taking the bench and I can document these case by case, Circuit by Circuit, and District by District. Welcome to Banana Republic aka USA.
Iowa’s Keith Roark also jumped on President Obama’s bandwaggon this morning.
Current landscape on President Obama’s Road far from Jeralyn Merritt’s Delusional Forest:
Obama has gained yet another superdelegate, Hawaii Sen. Daniel Akaka. Akaka is the second Hawaii superdelegate to announce today and the third superdelegate overall to go to Obama since this morning.
Idaho Democratic Party Chairman Keith Roark will endorse a presidential candidate some time after 2 p.m. ET. Obama won the state overwhelmingly, 80%-17%.
Obama has now picked up 22 superdelegates since last Tuesday’s contests in North Carolina and Indiana. Clinton has picked up 1.5.
*** UPDATE *** Roark is officially now for Obama, the Obama campaign confirms. Roark is the fourth today for the Illinois senator.
The NBC NEWS delegate counts:
PLEDGED: Obama 1,590, Clinton 1,426
SUPERS: Obama 279, Clinton 276.5
TOTAL: Obama 1,869, Clinton 1,702.5
