Stepping away from the presidential race for a moment, there is special election for a House seat in Mississippi today. Why is this so important?
Because Democrats, against serious odds, have already plucked two seats away from Republicans in ruby red districts in special elections (including Denny Hastert's seat--awkward!). Three would seem to indicate a pattern.
And the polls show this thing could go either way (Democrat Travis Childers almost won outright, missing by only a few hundred votes, which is why this additional runoff is being held), which may be why the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is pulling out all the stops there.
And on the Republican side? Why Dick Cheney himself has been flown in (presumably sans shotgun).
On a related note, if you want to learn why Dick Cheney became the imperious and somewhat befuddled man he is today, Young Dick Cheney: Great American will achieve that for you, while making you laugh.
Update: The House Republican campaign slogan is "the change you deserve," which also happens to be the slogan of an anti-depressant medication. Need I say more?

I wonder if in private the Neocons and religious wackos look at the rotting corpse of the GOP they left and say “It Is Good”.
It is generally bad form to dance around the rotting corpse of your enemy. Or your enemies allies. However…

I am not sure they are, um, enough in the reality-based community to make those sober judgments Box…
The sober reality part of the GOP is buying Rolaids and Valium in truckload lots. I feel for them. All the power is concentrated in the Neocons and Religious Right sections of the party.
I suspect many of them are hoping that there will be a party purge after a disasterous election. There’s really nothing else they can hope for. And by the time they get control back, there will be some form of national health care as untouchable as Social Security.

You know, that word “deserve” is uniquely republican elite speak.
It reeks of entitlement, privilege, and also a backhanded velvet gloved insult. I have a forked tongued friend who used this word like a stiletto.
“May you have the birthday you deserve” with the disdain dripping down the sidewalk practically.
“may you have the children you deserve” I chirped in reply.
