Hillary Clinton coasted to victory as expected in West Virginia, in what many have pointed out is her strongest region (Appalachia), winning approximately two-thirds of the vote.
But the bigger news came out of a few other states. In Mississippi, Democrat Travis Childers won a special election for an open House seat. Democrats are now three for three in these races, and as I pointed out yesterday, you can expecte fullscale panic to have erupted at National Republican Campaign Committee HQ now. They spent fully one fifth of their funds to try and protect a seat where George W. Bush won with well over 60% of the vote.
The release by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is below, but first, it is also important to note that netroots favorite Scott Kleeb won his primary to be the Democratic Senate nominee in Nebraska, beating former Republican businessman Tony Raimondo. This even after Raimondo tapped his personal wealth. A big victory for Kleeb.
Ok, now the release on the huge Democratic victory in Mississippi:
Voters in “one of the safest Republican areas in the nation” delivered a mandate for change tonight and for the first time in more than 30 years, Democrats won three seats in special elections in one cycle– MS-01, LA-06, and IL-14. The American people have clearly rejected the special interest driven agenda of the Republican party.
President Bush easily won IL-14, LA-06, and MS-01. Republicans’ losses in these three solidly Republican districts is simply catastrophic. The DCCC is targeting 50 districts this cycle with far better Democratic performances than IL-14, LA-06, and MS-01.
After losing IL-14 and LA-06, the Republicans pulled out all the stops to win MS-01:
Vice President Dick Cheney, Governor Haley Barbour, former Governor Mike Huckabee, Senator Thad Cochran, former Senator Trent Lott, and Senator Roger Wicker have all campaigned on Republican Greg Davis’ behalf.
President Bush, Laura Bush, and Senator McCain recorded automated calls that were sent to voters throughout the district.
Republicans have had to spend nearly 20 percent of their cash on hand on a reliably Republican district. The conservative group Freedom’s Watch spent at least $460,000. In total, Republicans have spent more than $1.7 million on MS-01, a district President Bush twice won easily.
The fact that MS-01 was a competitive race reflects the strength of Democratic candidate Travis Childers, the damage to the Republican brand, and the depth of the NRCC’s problems this cycle.
Republican Attacks
Travis Childers has had everything but the kitchen seat thrown at him by Greg Davis, the NRCC, and the shadowy outside group Freedom’s Watch.
Republicans offer no solutions on the issues that Americans are most concerned about – good paying jobs, gas and grocery costs, and health care costs. Republicans desperately tried to nationalize this election by focusing their extensive negative advertising on Senator Obama and Speaker Pelosi. This tactic didn’t work in IL-14, it didn’t work in LA-06, and tonight we learned it doesn’t work in even higher Republican performing districts. The Republican candidate even spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to tie Childers to Reverend Jeremiah Wright.

And according to the WaPo, the margin of victory in MS-01 was 54-46% in a race that was projected to be close.
Democratic Victory May Be a Bellwether
*giggle*
I consider this to be a very positive indicator for Novemeber. The GOP linked the local race to Obama, tried to do a Wright Job and it didn’t work. They brought in their big guns, including the Neocon hero Cheney and it didn’t work. They spent 20% of their available fund at least, plus help from a Swiftboat group and it didn’t work. This in a SOLID Bush district. Just imagine what will happen when they roll that program out nationwide!
I love it.
One thing nobody has pointed out is that they spent all this money on a an election that only holds to the end of the year! The GOP was so desperate they blew 20% of their ready cash on a 6 month election during a lame duck session!
Boxturtle (Good morning, Cliff!)
While it is a bit disappointing that Childers seems to be a “blue dog,” this win is in MISSISSIPPI! All the more reason to support Blue America candidates nationwide.
This could be a blue tsunami that could give Pres. Obama a real mandate for change.
It also seems as though he spent some effort putting some distance between him and Obama. No endorsements either way and no Obama appearences.
There’s certainly concern that in that region Obama is no help for Dems. One of Childers campaign ads mentions prominately that he’s never even MET Obama. So we really don’t know what might have happened if they had successfully linked Obama to Childers.
Also, this fellow is not likely to be a solid Dem vote. And he’s really not likely to support Obama’s judicial nominations.
Boxturtle (This victory is a mixed bag, but it’s better than losing)
What has come from the West Virginia primary that will have lasting impact is that many more of us are aware that West Virginia while a beautiful state that has pockets of informed caring people is a quintissential bulk bastion of racism and ignorance and much of it is mired in poverty, religiosity, and wasting a lot of time playing with guns instead of actually reading a book.
West Virginia is a bell weather state for ignorance and lack of education imposed on the election–racis and stupidity invaded the voting booth writ large there yesterday.
The media was replete with interviews of ignorant gramatically challenge sentences on Obama’s Muslim ties, his name rhyming with Osama, flagpins, vague references to the flag as if the flag has anything to do with authentic patriotism, concern, or constructive efforts to improve the lot of people in this country.
How many flag draped SUV’s would pull out every stop to avoid the draft for themselves or their kids depending on the ages of the drivers and occupants? I can reel off scores of Senators and Congressmen who faked medical reports to get out of Viet Nam and whose prime time aged children are going no where near the armed services because they are afraid of the very real chance of being blown to bits or being deployed 4 times for years and worrying about being blown to bits, being economically devestated, or if they needed serious care to be pinballed around a woefully inadequate VAH inpatient and outpatient system by every medical metric imaginable.
It’s interesting that West Virginian Christy Hardin Smith occasionaly references classical music and much higher than 99.999999% of West Virginians don’t have a clue who Aaron Copeland or any of the other classical composers Smith refernces once in a while–and I’ll bet that some of the attorneys in the West Virginia bar don’t realize how many federal apellate judges have never litigated a case in a federal courtroom or how large a percentage of federal appellate panels are diluted by district court judges from other circuits and districts who aren’t keeping up with their own circuit’s case law, precedents and individual standards of review let alone with the other circuit’s. This practice is pathetic considering that the visting judge up for an expense paid shopping spree on their field trip may be deciding someone’s future in their business or their life.
So, I’m getting from your reply that you DON’T like West Virginia.
It’s clear that West Virginia prefers Hillary. That does not make them undereducated, ignorant or racist. I think there are a LOT of people nationwide who aren’t ready for a black president and they aren’t all racists.
West Virginia has NOTHING except tourism and coal and we’re trying to phase out the coal. Highway work costs 3-10 times as much as in other states because it’s all mountain. They depend on aid from Washington and they’ll support whomever they think will send them the most. Hillary made the case that she’d be worth more to them.
Boxturtle (I’ll be rafting the Upper Gaulley River again this fall)
who aren’t ready for a black president and they aren’t all racists.
Enjoy your rafting–there is beautiful country. As to coal mining practices, Congress has been deplorable in making them safe, because Congress people and their families never spend anytime coal mining.
It’s not that I don’t like West Virginia, it’s that I deplore its pandemic of ignorance and racisim that Clinton fed on.
Two in 10 white voters said race was important in how they voted, and more than 8 of 10 of these went for Hillary. This echoes an article in The Washington Post on Tuesday that chronicled the racism that some Obama volunteers found in Indiana and Pennsylvania.
From Modo:
What kind of process do you have to go through to get ready? Are their courses with course material?
Do you have to learn/acquire a special skill set? Do you/and or the rest of the people who need to be ready need extensive psychotherapy to get ready?
Help me out with your distinction. I was under the impression that people with dark skin, who may share the educational challenges that are systemic in White Americans to a high degree have increased melanin pigment in their skin–at least that’s what some of my medical training and the medical literature has incidcated.
What the hell is “not ready for a black President?”
Ignorant America was ready then for Sandra Day O’Conner to provide the Swing Vote that put a moron and meglomaniac killer like George Bush in the White House?
I think Modo’s observation on Hillary as always are accurate.
So people who like chronic liars and theives who can’t even keep their dog from getting killed when the narcissitic egomaniacs leave him in the yard alone are down with Hillary Racist Clinton and her Racist bubbah husband–except when it comes to sex with black women?
What are you ready for that’s black? A wardrobe? The cable guy? Guys who manage your grocery?
If a black doc does a Z-plasty is it a different Z-plasty than one done by a white doc?
And for all those Edwards fans over at FDL and for all those delusional Clintonistas, your man John Edwards has endorsed President Obama. Take that Hillary girl.
