National Finance Chair Tom Loeffler is gone. We wrote about him here in the post McCain's Murderers Row.
This is going to be a huge vulnerability for the "reformer," as his campaign is swimming with lobbyists with all sorts of sordid ties (as I have said before, I have two chapters in The Real McCain devoted to these kinds of McCain connections).
Here is more on the Loeffler story:
But the fallout may not be over. One top campaign official affected by the new policy is national finance co-chair Tom Loeffler, a former Texas congressman whose lobbying firm has collected nearly $15 million from Saudi Arabia since 2002 and millions more from other foreign and corporate interests, including a French aerospace firm seeking Pentagon contracts. Loeffler last month told a reporter "at no time have I discussed my clients with John McCain." But lobbying disclosure records reviewed by NEWSWEEK show that on May 17, 2006, Loeffler listed meeting McCain along with the Saudi ambassador to "discuss US-Kingdom of Saudi Arabia relations."
Another potential problem: Loeffler's firm started paying $15,000 a month last summer to one of its lobbyists, Susan Nelson, after she left to become McCain's full-time finance director, said a source familiar with the arrangement (who asked not to be identified talking about sensitive matters). Campaign officials were told the payments were "severance" for Nelson and that they ended by November. But in "February or March," Loeffler rehired Nelson as a consultant to "help him with his clients" while she continued on the McCain payroll, according to a campaign official who asked not to be identified talking about personnel matters. Federal election law prohibits any outside entity from subsidizing the income of campaign workers. McCain's officials say they have been assured that Nelson did actual work for Loeffler's lobbying clients—and that the payments were proper. But after NEWSWEEK posed questions about the matter, they confirmed Loeffler's resignation and the termination of Nelson's consulting contract. (Loeffler and Nelson did not respond to requests for comment.) Also last week, energy adviser Eric Burgeson was ousted.

Cliff,
Thanks for the post. I hope we can keep highlighting Mr. Contradiction’s continued sleeping with the lobbyists
By the way, where is Vicki Iseman?
Wha? This lobbyist is connected to the Saudis? Doing business with the enemy again I see. Well, at least McCrazy isn’t breaking campaign finance laws! Oh wait. Nevermind. Well hey! At least he doesn’t call his wife a c**t and then stick up for her when it’s time for her to release her tax returns showing hundreds of millions of dollars, because she and McCrazy don’t want everyone to know they’re not ONE OF US! Oh wait.
Fifteen of the nineteen hijackers were Saudis and to think George Bush & John McCrazy continue to be connected with them.
I can’t wait to find out that one of McCrazy’s lobbyist is connected to Iran, you know, when Halliburton was in that country doing business with the Iranians under the direction of Dick Cheney.
This must be McCain’s new theme song
TeeHeee….. ya think there will be anyone left in the campaign?
63 lobbyists on the bus….. take one down and make them resign…..
62 lobbyists on the bus …… Cliff keep taking them down!
KayInMaine,
Loved your story the other day about the guy taking the rock and you drilling him for it.
I teach high school so I cannot comment during the day, but I can read the posts during Conference time, lunch, and after school so I could not compliment your actions at the time.
I wonder how many are affiliated with Israel or A*PAC? Since McCain is demanding the list, will he disclose the list of people who are on it? Can’t think it’d only be the handful that he’s currently let-go.
And Loeffler’s aerospace links with a French firm…sounds awfully like it’s related to the whole Boeing fiasco. Is McCain going to tell us all the lobbyists affiliated, not only acting as “agents” with foreign countries, but also foreign and multi-national firms????
ugg, I can’t help but feel we are vetting mccain for him before the race begins
Thanks AppleCanyon2! I was not happy about it to say the least as you know.
Bah hahahaha! I wonder how many times that one will have to be played? Scary to think about. Here’s another one that can be played daily in the meantime…

Perfect! LOL
Cliff!!!
you look so cute first thing in the morning.
1,845 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Cliff Schecter and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Great work Brother Cliff, now if we ken jest keep the heat and light on these cockroaches as they scatter away from the political dinner table. We gotta keep followin’ the money and in this case it means followin’ the direct links between the lobbyist-campaign managers, the corporate oligarchy and anti-democratic interests like the Saudi royal family. The May 17 meeting between McCrazy and the Saudi Ambassador is a killer…it needs to get catapulted into the corporate media.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, WE’RE GUNNA HAFTA FIGHT TA GET BACK WHAT THEY’VE STOLEN FROM US!!
I have been wondering lately and maybe someone here knows the answer.
Did Theresa Heinz Kerry ever have to release her tax returns during the 2004 campaign?
I know there was a lot of discussion about it at the time, but I do not know. The reason I am asking is because that would have set a precedent for Cindy to release/not release her tax returns.
Are the rules only for those of us who are Democrats/Progressives?
Yes she did…an abridged version that included any interests that could be seen as affected by Senator Kerry’s actions as an elected official.

Great post, Cliff! Keep up the good works! If McBush gets a true listing representative of who is lobbying for whom, his campaign would be drained. There would be very few left working for him, no?
Lobbiests are not tainted by dirty partisan politics. That’s why McCain is The Maverick. He doesn’t trade in the traditional coin of political favors, give and take. He works directly with the takers in a way that even Bush doesn’t.
It’s time to finally take politics out of government. It’s time to put government directly in the hands of those who pay. No more seedy middle men.
This isn’t even corruption. It’s simply how the world will work going forward. Government is no longer the dominant organizational principal of societies or between them. Corporations are now the dominant model.
Norske and Katymine,
Thank you so very much. This is such a great community!
Norske,
You live in a beautiful area. I have been canoeing on the St. Croix many times in the past. This summer I promised my wife that we would go to Red Wing, Stillwater, and Mall of America. Looking forward to showing her the area.
cliff, friday on the diane rehm show in the first hour they mentioned cliff shirley (527’s) resigning, but skipped charlie black, etc. in their discussion of lobbyists…i wrote and producer wrote back they did cover lobbyists and mccain…i wrote back saying they skipped a few, from a letter i wrote back earlier in the week, so, wrote back again with the ’little’ list of top campaign people, along with how they are lobbyists for dictators, and the chevron/burma stuff…..
lo and behold they put it on the air in the next hour…all of it…no kidding…..i yelled ALLLLLLRIIIIIIIGHT!!!! scramble PR people scramble!!!!!!!! red alert damage control!!!! ha……truth hurts more than anything we could make up.
Well you couldn’t pick a better place. If you get a change take the steam boat out of Red Wing it is a dinner cruise and I’m not too sure whether they added a casino. I am from Minnesota and know the area well. I sure miss it. I’m in Texas now. Great culture change. LOL. The Mall of America is probably a two day trip to get through all of it. Stillwater has some neat caves and dining places. Pretty Artsie community. Have a wonderful trip.
Thank you!
My wife loves to shop so per your advice, I will plan for two days at the Mall.
Thank you for the other attractions too. Much appreciated.
You are welcome. I envy you. Ihavn’t been back in two years need to make a trip soon tho. I still have family up their.
Awesome, dmac! I’ll have to look up that segment.
There’s always talk about the “revolving door” in Washington between being elected and appointed officials and being lobbyists. Since this seems to be a first in history, maybe we could call this the “revolving back door” to the McCain campaign.
Thank you one and all for the tips and answers to questions.
We are putting down hardwood flooring so time to go rip up some carpeting.
And on a Sunday too, darn.
You’re doing the work of the angels….ALLLLLRIIIIIIGHT indeed!
I wonder how many more lobbyists are working in McCain’s campaign? With a show of hands, how many think it’s more than 20?
*raising hand*
Bye AppleCanyon2! Have fun.
Strange how years of abusive political attacks can drive one to adopt separate but equal tactics. If it was left up to me, I would ask three questions of McBush:
1) How many multi-million dollar planes did you manage to wreck before you managed to get yourself captured in Vietnam?
2) Do you think those wrecked planes and your getting captured may have been the result of your own reckless, unthought-out behavior?
3) Would you use that same reckless behavior in our foreign policy if you became President, ie, Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran!
Of course, I’d use these questions at a strategic time; if they try to swiftboat Obama or in some other way waterboard him. In either of those cases, I’d ask these questions in a heartbeat!
Fifteen Thousand Dollars a Month??? $15,000???
That is the kind of thing Mr. and Mrs. America need to be aware of, that lobbyists who are selling their democracy to the highest political bidders are being paid more per month than what some of We, The People (especially people who seem, still, to vote against their own economic self-interest) make in a year.
All the high-faultin’ talk about rule of law and cost of Sugar Momma’s corporate jet and so on is fine, but let’s get some of the cold, hard numbers out there so people can see just how completely for sale these people are.
Does the for-profit media even know how many lobbyists are involved with McCain’s campaign? Both of the disgraced variety and the “normal” ones?
It’s hahd werk being a lobbyist, I mean really, all those fancy DC parties to attend, all special trips abroad to make deals with our enemies (packing & unpacking suitcases!), and then there are the McCain lobbyists who have to wait 6 minutes and a reboot of his teleprompter to get one sentence out of him. Jees!
/snark of course
Have you ever had cocktail weenie heartburn? It’s the worst! Common people really have no idea how the oligarchy suffers on their behalf.
LOL I know! You people are being ungrateful for crying out loud! And let’s not forget it’s hahd werk getting in and out of those limos provided by the American people. We’re so mean to the lobbyists! Poor things. Cocktail weenie heartburn is no different than having to plow the land with your front teeth! Jees.
You people need to retune your compassion meter. Jees.
thanks for the attagirls!
i keep sayin’ write the freakin’ letters!!!! just the facts, maam…..and when they found out, a couple times now, that i had already sent it earlier in the week, and i was writing to say why wasn’t ’this part covered?” it got on the air.
applecanyon, don’t know if you’ll see this……..if it’s still there, and if it’s the same at all….frost’s is the place to have a nice, elegant breakfast…….beautiful place in an old building, hand-squeezed orange juice, ohhhhh i loved it there-and i also like mom and pop places…..my dad worked up there in minn for a year or two when the company he worked for took over st. regis paper, so got to go up there. loved it…..later, parents almost bought a condo in an old building across the street from frost’s, i was going to transfer there and rent it……wow what a place…..stillwater was my favorite, but that was in the 80’s long time ago.
mac’afferty’s was another place we spent some time, an irish bar, no longer there. was the real deal, dad said don’t mention being protestant while you’re in there……harp’s on tap……bands from ireland……they would ’pass the hat’ for you know who…….wow, that place was an education……and the muuuuuuusic, can still feel it on my skin. i’m sure there’s still an irish music scene up there, it was fantastic.
you almost have to laugh at those poor unfortunate souls forced to live on $15Gs per month quel horror!!!
New post at fdl: Curious George.
siri I am blushing now
Great work dmac!!! This should be a model for us all. If we want our democracy back, we have to fight for it!
Vicki disappeared…but there is much, much more out there. Enough to keep us busy until the election!
Cliff, another reader of your fine book here. Between you and Glenn Greenwald I have some hope for getting the information out. Keep going, I don’t think the MSM will be of much assistance, but you two are doing good work.
No wonder we have so much trouble exposing this fraud. Just watched the six o’ clock news, Sunday May 18, in Tulsa, OK on CBS.
This comment was made….”A campaign official in John McCain’s campaign group resigned today”…..No explanation, no other words were given.
Uggh!
