I spent several months reporting on the Abramoff scandal for Raw Story. I can say without hesitation that this ad presents the unvarnished truth: McCain did go easy on Reed and a lot of other well-connected Republicans, and now he's cashing in. McCain never even called Reed to testify before the Senate.
Reed was at the very center of the plot to defraud American Indian tribes of tens of millions of dollars. He wasn't just an Abramoff crony, he was a co-conspirator. Reed took gambling money from Abramoff's tribal gaming clients to defeat a lottery referendum in Alabama in order to prevent competition for their casinos. Reed played a key role in laundering the money Abramoff bilked from the tribes.
Ironically, the public still doesn't know the full extent of Reed's culpability because McCain refuses to release something like 70% of all the documents he amassed in his inquiry. Henry Waxman says that McCain won't even release some of these documents to the House Oversight Committee.
McCain knows exactly how dirty Reed is, though. He has no business taking money from Reed and calling himself a maverick. Moreover, McCain agreed to attend Ralph Reed's fund raising event. When the big day came, even Reed was too ashamed to show his face--but John McCain will probably keep the $1.75 million raised at the event.
When you've been outclassed by Ralph Reed, it's time to take stock.

ATTACK!!!
Hi, Lindsay.
Good catch, maybe it is time to call for McCain to release the Abramoff documents.
”I spent several months reporting on the Abramoff scandal for Raw Story.”
finally. someone to blame for the Abramoff monkey on my back

I thought the Dems were in charge of the Senate now so how come the records cannot be released. Also any chance we can still try Reed I’m sick of rich guys stealing million doing less time than a car thief.
As I said on an earlier thread, I think you should reserve judgment until you’ve walked a mile in seven pairs of his $520 shoes.
Gee, maybe that’s something Obama could actually do. After all, it is related to Senate business!
“We just can’t afford more of the same.”
That’s pretty clever.
Wonder where they got the idea?
Seems to be floating around out there. (Everywhere the same Mc$ame thing)
(and to danps) you shoe is correct, that’s sole-talkin’, as to the walkin’, it might take a spell, ‘cuz they’re loafers, don’t ya know?
;~D
Well, you go to multi-million dollar vacation estate with the shoes you have, not the shoes you wish you had.
Speaking of Rumsfeld, perhaps we should try to make this the next viral video sensation sensation:

You can always tell what Rove and friends identify as a weakness in their candidates, because they then try to project it onto their opponent. I noticed recently McInsane make some ridiculous criticism about Obama’s “judgment.” We know this is one of Obama’s key positive points, especially with all that tape of him criticizing the Iraq Invasion before it even happened, so this video would be a good way to solidify the theme that McInsane is the one with horrendous judgment. He literally says that he would’ve picked Rummy and Cheney for the exact same positions that Shrub did. Fits perfectly into Obama’s latest theme…
John McCain: More of the Same.
OT: OMFG, TNR’s Sacha Zimmerman went concern troll over Rachel Maddow’s MSNBC gig. So Glenzilla ripped off her leg and is beating everything at TNR with the bloody end. Absolutely horrifying!!!
Things -
per dengre at Big Orange - Abramoff is scheduled for sentencing 9/4/8
there is to be a pre sentencing report to the Court 10 days prior. diarist makes case Dorgan (now Chair) will release juiciest to coincide with the news cycle - as a means to kick off the General proper
we’ll see
Big Orange
McCain will take stock, take bonds, take a check, take a suitcase of cash . . . it’s all good. Right, Ralph?
A question for our constitutional lawyers???
Can the current chairman of the committee reopen the investigation into Reed/Abramoff again and Subpoena those documents that Mc Pain is hiding??
If it can be done it should … Tell Harry to reopen the investigation!!
apologies to you if I came off rude downstairs - just grumpy
Question even without convicting Reed, McCain cost Reed an election as Lieutenant Governor.
Which was payback I think for Reed supposedly starting the McCain’s adopted kid was his bastard rumor when Bush ran the first time.
These two men should hate each other I mean what is the point of power if you can’t indulge hate like that?
How Desperate is McCain for cash that he would think about stepping into the same room as Ralph to raise money?
10 days Cool! Pizza and Abramhoff in orange jammies.
I’m sick of rich guys stealing million doing less time than a car thief.
Your lack of Republican-ness is showing.
A car, for the great un-washed masses, is a luxury.
Millions of dollars, otoh, is a *necessity*, you know - like food - for any self-respecting Republican.
Damn. Shocked that CNN went “there” about McInsane’s affairs:
http://www.jedreport.com/2008/.....-with.html
It always feels weird when watching a Conglomerate Media news source actually report in a balanced way in regard to a Repube.
Sidenote: Just realized there’s a video tour of one of the McInsane’s (recently former) mansions. It’s like watching “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_NuzDmfnJQ
where is cboldt when we need her/him ??? parliamentary-wise, how could Dorgan not be in possession now ?
Simple GREED for power and
moneyOh yeah he doesn’t need money he has Cindy’s $$$$. Besides if he needs more he can sell one of the houses he doesn’t knows he owns!Or even without reopening the investigation — how can it possibly be legal for a former chairman to keep the current one from seeing documents from a Senate investigation? They belong to the Senate, not to McCain.
Seems like there’s nothing to lose by hammering on this — what’s he going to say, that he’s protecting the privacy of Republican felons and unindicted co-conspirators?
I hope someone does a “House” parody video with John McCain as the crazy, limping Dr. House.
it’s actually a little richer than that -
one of the other guys working on this fundraiser: Cagle ? Croy ? was the guy who used McCain’s hearings to tar and successfully torpedo Reed’s run for Lt Gov. -
Mammon is their god
Attack, attack, attack. Drum it into the minds of Americans that McCain is a rich elitist out of touch with the lives of most Americans. Destroy him and his party of personal greed and avarice.
Arianna kicks it up a notch and goes all Google Earth on their ass
By the way, it’s great seeing you here, Lindsay!
Oh, no. Perhaps instead of apologizing, I should have said, “Great minds run in the same channels.” No offense taken; just didn’t want you to think I deliberately stole your idea without attribution.
Does anyone know how Reed avoided prosecution? Did he get a pass because he ratted everyone else out?
I will never understand how this could have happened, but I understand that currently the Democratic party has more millionaires in it than the Rethugs.
Nope. Got a pass because he’s a Christian s/
OT, but I was looking the email from Brave New Films about McCain’s houses, and the ad GMail put up based on the contents was:
Hee!
I will never understand how this could have happened, but I understand that currently the Democratic party has more millionaires in it than the Rethugs.
Whuh? I wonder what would happen if Los Angeles was taken out of the equation?
Or perhaps the Repubs simply have “better” accountants….
New CHS post at fdl
I imagine Reed was at least minimally cooperative. The Reed misdeeds that we know of are less legally serious than those of Michael Scanlon and Jack Abramoff. Reed didn’t steal money from the tribes, as far as we know. He actually worked to rile up the Alabama Christians against the lottery. Mostly, Reed and Norquist conspired with the others to route the money through various intermediaries including non-profits. It’s an outrage that Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform retained its tax-exempt status.
How can Congress pry those documents loose from McCain’s fingers? After all, the Democrats are supposedly in control of Congress, aren’t they? And yes, I know, there is supposedly some kind of “gentlemen’s agreement” with McCain among Senators, but who authorized this agreement, and why?
The number of documents involved is HUGE, and I’m sure that they include copies of many e-mails declared “missing” elsewhere. There’s gold in them thar hills, and Waxman and others needs to get them.

Hi Lindsay! Sorry I’m so late to the thread.
And, something I just found from last Monday- for anyone else who’s as behind as I am:
McCain’s Atlanta fund-raiser takes in $1.75 million
~~McCain, a U.S. senator from Arizona, had a special guest along for the trip: U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), the former Democratic presidential candidate and vice presidential nominee now serving as an independent. Lieberman has endorsed McCain and praised him and Georgia’s top Republicans.
“I’m also proud to be here with these three great Americans, your two senators and a great governor, Sonny Perdue,” Lieberman said, referring to U.S. Sens. Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss.
[ ]Reed e-mailed supporters and friends to urge them to give to the McCain campaign and instructed them to send contributions directly to him. Reed told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he sent the e-mail at the request of a campaign official and was given boilerplate language to use. He said he has no official role in the campaign or in this event, something the McCain campaign confirmed.~~
Well, some will rob you with a six gun, some with a fountain pen.
