Violence Breaks Out At RNC Protest in Minneapolis (VIDEO)By: Jane Hamsher Monday September 1, 2008 2:32 pm |
Update: It's being reported that Amy Goodman of Democracy Now was just arrested.
(Thanks to Noah Kunin and the video journalists at The Uptake, who have been live vlogging with Qik cameras)
It’s really interesting — the Uptake folks have had people fanned out all over the city with live Qik cameras. Nine people were just arrested on charges of conspiracy to riot.
Democracy Now Journos were just arrested too apparently …
Apparently the 9 being arrested are part of the comms team for ColdSnapLegal
What a funny video. Entirely surreal when Chris Matthews appears out of nowhere having his lunch.
Seeds of Peace collective - who feed demonstrators and all who need it - are being arrested now.
Seeds of Peace now let go …
Who is it that are doing the “rioting?” Do people think that this is another setup, plants that then excuse the arrests of the people documenting the police overzealousness? It has happened before. Anyone getting any feel for this?
FYI there is no video on my screen. Just a blank spot
There’s nothing in this for Democrats. Democrats should stop rioting and go home to give money to charity for victims of hurricanes.
If it’s a set-up riot and we get pictures of it’s participants, then we can check to see which Republican Congressman they work for.
Do we have a way to get pictures of individuals who are rioting?
Jane, as much as I adore FDL, I have to ask what the hell is going on?
Peaceful protests, IMHO, are productive. Violent ones are not.
Riots. Are. Not. Good. for the election of a Democratic President.
Believe me, I am as liberal as they come, but when it comes to protestors actively inciting, and participating in violence, the line stops there. Had any of this type of activity in any way put Obama in danger during the Dem’s convention, you better believe I would have wanted it stopped.
As a word of caution, others will think the same.
Keeping the peace during politically charged events has two sides to it. In this case, the authorities created a climate of fear and hostility from day one, by surveilling, intimidating and seizing peaceful demonstrators. Nothing begets violent responses from crowds faster than that type of repression.
If they actually arrested Amy Goodman, they will live to regret that methinks.
That’s why I think it is most likely that people who want McCain to win will be the instigators of any violence.
From my perspective, we are working to report the news - news the MSM is ignoring. There are multiple demonstrations going on in St Paul - all by people opposed to the RNC - many due mainly to the war. Are there provacteurs - I’m sure of it, are there also tons of people just trying to exercise their free speech - absolutely. Some will chose nonviolent civil disobedience such as blocking buses with Republican delegates - this is in the honored tradition of folks like MLK. Some will go to the permitted march and the “Free” Speech Zone. There are also some who feel the administration and what they see as corporatism needs to be opposed by property damage - not my approach at all but something worth reporting.
Journalists and medics are being arrested … that should be of concern to all.
Overall, we have seen that the police have grouped all together and done a lot of abusive and harassing things - that is not what American is supposed to stand for.
FYI - Jeff Fariss is reporting this story on his show today on KPHX radio…. I have a feeling someone’s been reading the Silo this weekend..
You gotta be kidding me. They arrested Amy Goodman? What in the h e double toothpicks were they thinking? What a bunch of dipsticks. They’re gonna regret that.
Very hard to prove that the instigators are coming from the McCain camp. In the media, it will play out as those dfh’s instigating violence, hense my fear.
And Siun, I have no doubt that you are just reporting the news that traditional media is ignoring. Just wondering how they are going to interpret it. I would hate to see this blown all out of proportion to our disadvantage. I guess all I am saying is be careful.
Was the correct video embedded? I didn’t see any of the violence mentioned in the headline. At the end of the report the videographer mentions the vandalism shown, but that’s it.
I also recommend that the liberals here recognize that there are more than Republicans and Democrats. Many of the folks seen at the demonstration in this video are probably radicals. They have different politics than you, and are certainly not necessarily agents provocateurs.
But thanks for this live coverage. It’s pretty amazing that this is technically possible now!
From the Star Tribune:
“…
Scattered clashes between protesters and police continued into the evening. The National Guard has been called out to assist.
At about 3 p.m. at the request of the St. Paul Police Department, 150 Minnesota Army National Guard soldiers were asked to assist with crowd control downtown.
As many as 40 people were arrested this afternoon for trying to block buses carrying delegates heading for the Xcel Energy Center. Among those arrested at 9th and Jackson Streets was the host of the alternative TV show “Democracy Now” Amy Goodman and two producers, Nicole Salazar and Sharif Abdul Koudouf, said Elizabeth Press who is with the show.
Press and other demonstrators were sprayed with an irritant, she said.
Two arresteees were from the local Cold Snap Legal Collective and nine others were from the North Star Health Collective. They have been taken to the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center.

I just got a call from Nick of Houston IMC and Dennis of Democracy Now! reporting that a Snake March of around 50 people was cut into at least 2 groups with the police surrounding and arresting around 30 participants at the Corner of 7th St. and Temperance in St. Paul.
Among those arrested were members of the Tejas Bloc and Democray Now! Host Amy Goodman, Producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous, Nicole Salazar and Paul (whose last name and roll I didn’t catch). Nick has video which he will try to edit promptly. We’ll try to get more info at as soon as we can.

CNN.com is reporting that those doing the damage are fringe groups who were on the edges of the peaceful protesters. That pretty fair for them.
If they arrested Amy and her folks they’ll live to rue the day.
Sounds like the sweep tactics used by NYPD a few years ago.
From Greenwald’s site:
– casual_observer
Jim Lehrer covered the demonstration and arrests, identifying 2 sites. Few details.
Violence? A little strong for what I saw.
That will be good for about 10 secs of coverage from MSM ,if they cover it at all!
